Here lie the pieces of my broken heart
Shattered on the table
A mosaic of the love I once held for you
Glistening with droplets of tears
Landing in the cracks of unkept promises
Trickling over crevices left by lies
The pieces sharp, jagged
Hearts never break clean
Fragments litter the floor
Dust of memories
Whispers of unmet needs
Dashes of hopes ground down by neglect
My heart makes a lovely piece of art
As the pieces lay lifeless upon our kitchen table
A final meal for the most undeserving of guests
I want to watch you chew the glass
Hear it crunch beneath your jaw
To see where the shards cut
An exchange of blood for a life that once was
Instead, I’ll take some glue and a bit of gold
I’ll fashion my heart into something new
Something flawed yet stunning
Then I’ll place it upon a shelf
Where I’ll marvel at its resilience
Revere its tenacity
And honor its faultlines
I’ll keep it safe
Keep it guarded
Keep it mine
For all time
